Rome, Italy is one of those cities where wandering aimlessly through the streets will reward you with beautiful scenes around every corner. This city is packed with gorgeous architecture, delicious traditional restaurants, quaint Rome boutique hotels, sophisticated clothing shops, attractive plazas and beautiful sculptures and fountains.
While you are in Rome, why not simply step out the door of your Rome boutique hotel and wander in any given direction? As you meander through the winding cobblestone streets, the "Eternal City" will reveal itself to you as you spontaneously make your way around.
Of course, as you venture away from your Rome boutique hotel and wander the streets, don’t forget to keep your wits about you and be street smart. Here are a few things to keep in mind while exploring Rome:
Always bring a map with you or the GPS on your phone. The streets of Rome are certainly not straight, nor are they laid out in a logical grid fashion and it is easy to get turned around and lost.
Watch out for Vespa’s. These motor scooters are a popular form of transport in Rome and they will come speeding down the cobblestone lanes whenever you least expect it, so be prepared to move out of the way.
Be careful when crossing the street! The way that the locals drive in Rome is downright scary, and you will feel like you take your life in your own hands every time you step off the pavement. Be extra cautious.
Also, there are all sorts of liberties taken when it comes to parking cars in Rome, so don’t be surprised if you see vehicles abandoned at an odd angle halfway on the pavement and halfway jutting out into the street!
Don’t carry a lot of valuables with you, and keep them close to you to avoid pickpockets, especially in crowded tourist areas.
Do your solo wandering during the daytime, and stick with your friend or partner after dark. The city is quite safe, but it is better to stay together just in case.
