The days are gone when 3D entertainment was a thing for the huge IMAX cinema or, even, the multiplex. Much of home entertainment is now in 3D and, if the experts are to be believed, there’s a lot more to come.

It’s hard to believe, but 3D entertainment has been around for a long time. No sooner had the photographic camera been invented than people were making 3D photographs. The first known 3D film was created in 1903, and the first 3D film to be screened to the public, in 1922, was The Power of Love.

However, it was the rise of the IMAX cinema that really brought about the latter day revival of 3D entertainment. Now that home cinema and television technology has caught up, home entertainment is undergoing a revolution.

3D home cinema

In order to watch movies at home in 3D you will need: a 3D-enabled High-Definition Satellite box, 3D-enabled High-Definition cable or a 3D-enabled Blu-ray player, and a 3D-enabled video projector or 3D-enabled TV. It’s not always easy to keep up with the pace of changes in the technology, so check with your retailer that the equipment you are purchasing does everything you need it to do.

Today’s 3D TVs

3D television isn’t just about movies and special effects: it could soon be about many, if not most, of the programmes we watch. One leading British broadcaster is currently trialling 3D sports programming, holding out the possibility of one of Andy Murray’s smashes coming out of your screen into your living room. You cannot be serious!

3D TV without glasses

As if to prove how quickly 3D technology is moving, a leading manufacturer has already unveiled what it says is a 3D television you can watch without glasses! The set is already on sale in Japan. The rush to make such TVs shouldn’t come as a surprise. One of the world’s largest broadcasters has already developed a 3D channel.

3D gaming

Some see the "no glasses" 3D TV as, in technological terms, almost a by-product of recent developments in video gaming. There are now many 3D video games which are made for consoles which offer 3D gaming without glasses.

Before you ask for a contents insurance quote , think about whether you will need cover for any of the fabulous 3D technologies which are becoming increasingly widely used within the home.
