Ghost hunting and paranormal investigation are a serious business - depending on where you're hunting, you may find that you encounter something that just can't be explained - and aren't a trick. But getting the most out of ghost hunting is trickier still.

You need a good group - Working with ghost hunting isn't as simple as talking to a couple of people and then chasing down 'spooks'. Everyone in your group has to have similar beliefs and melding mind-sets to ensure that your experience is as solid as possible. Without doing so, you'll find that your experience sours when someone jokes when the moment is tense and you don't appreciate it - or you ruin the moment for others. You need the right equipment - ghost hunting requires all sorts of specialised equipment, everything from video cameras equipped to record in night vision conditions, sound and audio equipment for picking up EVP and more. Basically, there's a lot of kit that you need, alongside the more mundane need to pay attention to everything around you and actually become keyed into both the history of the area you're investigating and the sightings and other reports that you may have heard about.

You need an open mind - most people are pretty open minded about the afterlife, but if you're going along on one of these events with a friend, it's critical that you remain open minded and interested in anything happening around you. There is often no trickery involved in ghost hunts, unless they're marketed as such, any experiences you have will be authentic.

You need patience - not just during the ghost hunt itself, but you'll need patience while reviewing the tapes - there is likely to be hundreds of hours of tape to review from a team of six taping in video and sound, so you'll need to be in it for the long haul. Reviewing tapes might seem dull, but it's amazing what some equipment picks up when set up correctly.
