Swing music dates back to the 1920s and the discovery of the Charleston and the Lindy Hop although the style of music most commonly associated with Swing now was developed later on in the 1930s. By the mid 30s, Swing had become very popular in the USA. Where the 1920s has become known as the Jazz Age is the USA, the 1930s became the Swing era. Like jazz before it, Swing was created by African Americans and not only did it represent a new era in music but it was also the one of the first times that the Black community had had such a heavy influence on the Western World.

The Heyday Of Swing

It took some time for Swing music to really be embraced by the music listening people, largely because of what was then seen as being an erratic style of music and the equally erratic dancing that was associated with it. However, by the mid 1930s it had become mainstream and by the end of the decade and the start of the 1940s it had become the most popular music genre in the US.

The Swing Resurgence

In the late 1990s and into the turn of the century, Swing music enjoyed a resurgence in its popularity both in the US and across the rest of the Western World. Not only was Swing itself popular but the crooner style of singing which can trace its roots back to Swing inspired Big Band music had also become popular once again.

UK Popularity

As with many styles of music and popular culture, what was popular in the US quickly made its way over here to the UK and soon there were many a London swing orchestra and swing band that were playing the same beat while dance halls filled with erratic dancers.
