We have finally moved house in the New Year. We moved in on a snowy day in
January and once everything was in place, we stood back to take a look at
how our new home looked. I was really pleased with it, but there was
something lacking. I re-arranged our pictures on the walls and checked out
the curtains, but still it did not really feel like home. The living room
was cosy and welcoming, and looked good with our sofa and chairs, and the
sideboard fitted perfectly into the new alcove. It took me some time to put
my finger on the problem, but after I went out for much needed supplies and
came into my new hallway from the front door I realised what it was! My new
hallway looked cold and unwelcoming. What I needed were new hall runners in
the entrance.

The hallway is a large one, and it has lovely slate tiles on the floor.
These look really good but they give a cold effect when you first come into
the house, and that is the last thing I wanted when friends and neighbours
came to visit my new home. Fortunately I had the solution – hall runners. I

chose a traditional hall runner in a Persian design, in black and beige,
which now runs the length of my hallway. My hall runner stretches from my
front door right down the hallway to the kitchen, almost like a welcome mat
for guests. I briefly thought about a red carpet design hall runner, but my
black and beige Persian design goes brilliantly with the slate floor and has
really made my new house much more of a home.

Being tempted by the red carpet effect, I then looked at the landing. My new
landings have a laminate flooring, so I felt that they too could benefit
from hall runners to give them a welcoming lift. I chose a modern design
this time, in a fashionable abstract vein with red as the base colour to add
warmth. I have two hall runners set at right angles to each other to cover
both the landings. With my Persian styled hall runner downstairs and my
abstract red carpet styles hall runners upstairs, I have finally found what
was lacking in my new home.

A simple change can make a big difference when setting up a new home. It can
be difficult to isolate what is missing. Take your time and think about what
your new home needs. I found that my hall runners gave that little extra
something to put my own stamp on my new house. The previous owners had
obviously not thought about hall runners in the entrance, but I found on
close inspection that tiled floors can give a cold effect. I want my home to
be warm and welcoming and hall runners are a very easy way to get that
effect. When visitors first step through my door now, they are greeted with
my new hall runner. I can’t wait to invite my new neighbours round!
