Sourcing Safes
Finding the right safe for your home or business is relatively straightforward, but there are a few things to take into account. Stupid question number one is – what is the safe for? Not as stupid as it sounds, as different safes are manufactured and designed for different purposes. The most common requirements for businesses are cash safes or data/media safes. For domestic purposes a number of factors need to be considered. Usually a domestic safe is to store jewellery or other valuable items that may be the subject of theft. However theft is only one reason that you may wish to store your valuables in a safe; when choosing a safe you may wish to consider models that offer fire and/or protection against flooding and humidity.
Commercial Safes
Cash safes are fairly self-explanatory – ideal for businesses where a high volume of cash sales are common. There is a huge variety of models on the market with different features. Larger businesses will require the deposit safe to be accessible to more than one member of staff; in this case a safe with an electronic locking system that can be programmed with multiple access codes gives added security. Each code can be assigned to one member of staff, allowing you to keep track of who is accessing the safe and when. However if your business only requires one or two people to be able to access the safe, a more traditional key or combination lock may be suitable. Cash safes have various other options which you may want to consider. Fireproof safes are generally appropriate for cash deposit storage – check the rating before finalising your purchase as some ‘fireproof’ safes have a limited time of resistance. The nature of your business and size of premises will need to be taken into account when choosing this aspect of your safe.
Data and Media Safes
If you store sensitive data as part of your business or have media files that need to be protected you should consider purchasing a data safe. Smaller models are lightweight, designed to protect against fire and humidity and can be quickly removed in the event of an emergency. Basic models are generally key operated – some with just a simple padlock. The priority for most data/media safes is to securely store data and avoid loss through fire or water damage. Other models included features to protect sensitive data from theft or misuse, features that may be important to your business.
Domestic Safes
The same considerations as to type and model will apply to domestic safes as with the business models – many safes are manufactured to be used in either domestic or commercial premises. Fire and flooding protection may be a specific concern for those purchasing domestic safes. Also if you are storing delicate or fragile items check the safe incorporates impact resistance features. The size of a domestic safe will be a consideration along with location. Wall and floor safes that can be very easily incorporated into your home and concealed equally easily are popular choices. In addition to standard safes, safes with specific purposes – for example gun safes – can usually be sourced from suppliers and manufactures. If you use guns for leisure or work purposes a secure gun safe is a legal requirement and will need to comply with BS specifications. With a vast range of safes available on the market, whatever your needs you will be able to find the right safe to fit your budget and your specific requirements.
