For riding

Horses require several pieces of tack, or horse equipment for proper riding. This ranges from a saddle and bridle to a martingale which stops a horse from raising its head too high. If your horse is highly spirited and raises its head it could smack you with the back of its skull, causing distress and damage to both you and the horse. To ride safely however, most argue that, at a minimum, you need a saddle and bridle. Some people manage without the saddle, others without anything at all, but if you are not an experienced rider it’s highly inadvisable to avoid taking your kit with you.

For Dressage

You may need to visit a tack shop to obtain good quality gear for dressage – again, a saddle, under blanket for the saddle in attractive colours, and bridle at a minimum are a must, and again, a martingale is recommended if your horse is highly spirited. Martingales don’t just stop you from potentially being injured; they prevent the horse from raising its head out of position and encourage a better gait. Many people feel they are cruel but it your horse needs one to teach it to keep its head in the right position, that’s often a step you have to take.

For country riding

Aside from a saddle, bridle, stirrups and other accoutrements that you might expect to need, you should also consider investing in a high visibility jacket to place on your horse, under the blanket and saddle – if you have to cross or ride on any country roads, not only do you have to adhere to the highway code where applicable, but you should ensure that you and your animal are highly visible to prevent drivers from spooking your horse by traveling too fast, or driving into you.
