Why It's Important to Wear the Right Clothes to the Gym

You are headed to the gym for a workout and you just grab whatever clothes you can find. It doesn't matter, because they are just going to get sweaty anyway, right?

Wrong. If you are serious about exercising, it actually does make a difference what you wear during your workout. The wrong shoes and sports clothing can slow you down and cause you discomfort.

Why is it so important to wear the right sports clothing?

The wrong shoes can really hurt.
If you are running or working out in old trainers, or the wrong type of trainers, you can be doing damage to your ankles, joints and spine. A proper shoe will support your feet properly and prevent injury. There are different types of shoes for each sport, whether you are a cross country runner or a basketball player. Ask a salesperson at a sports clothing store if you are not sure which kind of shoes you will need.

The wrong fabric will make you a sweaty mess.
Most fabrics, such as the cotton polyester of your ordinary t-shirt, are not designed to be worn when you are sweating a lot. However, most sports clothing is made with specially designed fabrics which wick sweat away from your skin making you much more cool and comfortable. These wonderful fabrics will keep you cool by letting your skin breathe. While other fabrics can irritate and chafe, sports clothing fabric will be gentle on your skin. Also, the moisture wicking properties of these fabrics will reduce odour as well, so you don't offend others with your perspiration.

You could get hurt.
In some cases, wearing inappropriate clothing to the gym can actually be dangerous. Shirts or shorts that are too baggy can get caught on equipment and cause injury. Clothing that is too tight can cut off your circulation or restrict your movement.

You don't want to look like a slob.
The gym is a social place after all, and it is good gym etiquette to take a little bit of pride in your appearance. You don't have to be dressed up, but at least wear some good quality sports clothing that fits you and doesn't have holes or stains all over it. You never know who you might meet in the gym, and you want to make a good impression.

Looking good will give you more confidence.
When we look and feel attractive, we automatically have more confidence and feel like we can take on a challenge. When you know that you look your best, you will feel better about yourself and push yourself further when it comes to working out.
