When it comes to cars, newer may not always be better. Sure, everyone wants bragging rights when it comes to the stuff that they own, and new cars certainly smell good. But many times buyers may be more concerned with getting the better deal than the better smelling car. And if what you’re concerned about is getting the most for your money, the better option at times is to go with used cars. The primary reason for this is that cars are depreciating assets, meaning that they lose value over time rather than gaining value. The moment a brand new car is driven off the lot, it is automatically worth less than what it was when it was sold. Even if you turned around immediately and tried to take the car back, you would never get out of it what you put into it. After a car is a few years old, it begins to depreciate more slowly. If the buyer waits until the car has a little wear on it, they will get several years out of the car but still manage to come out better financially when they sell it. But the good news here is that you don’t necessarily have to wait until a car is a few years old for it to be considered a used car; brand new cars that didn’t sell throughout the year of their making are often deeply discounted at the end of the year to make way for newer models. In addition to this, used cars are more affordable. Rather than taking on a hefty monthly payment (complete with insurance and interest costs), used cars are often easier on your back pocket. You’ll pay it off more quickly, and if you’re lucky you can pay cash and not be stuck with a payment plan. Do keep in mind that used cars are likely to have seen some sort of damage from previous owners, and a background check should always be completed before purchasing a used car. The flipside to this is that previous owners will be able to tell you what to watch out for, whereas a new car will come with its own set of quirks that no one is familiar with yet.
